“100% cashmere” tells you the fiber content. It doesn’t tell you how the yarn was spun — and that determines whether your sweater feels smooth and drapey, or soft and lofty.
The two main spinning methods — worsted and woolen — produce yarns with fundamentally different properties. Choosing wrong is one of the most common mistakes B2B buyers make when sourcing cashmere.
What “worsted” actually means
Worsted cashmere yarn is spun from long, parallel-aligned fibers using a combing process. The fibers are first carded (separated and randomized), then combed to remove short fibers and align the long ones parallel, then drawn and twisted tightly.
The result is a yarn that is:
- Smooth (long parallel fibers lay flat against each other)
- Strong (more fibers per cross-section = higher tensile strength)
- Drapey (less air between fibers = denser, more fluid fabric)
- Less prone to pilling (tightly twisted fibers don’t migrate)
Best for: 12+ gauge machine knitting, suiting-weight woven fabrics, fine-gauge scarves, any application where smoothness and drape matter.
What “woolen” actually means
Woolen cashmere yarn is spun from random-oriented fibers of varying lengths. The carding process randomizes fibers; there’s no combing step. The yarn is then twisted loosely.
The result is a yarn that is:
- Soft and lofty (lots of air trapped between random fibers)
- Warm (still air is an excellent insulator)
- Fuzzy halo (fiber ends poke out, creating the “cashmere bloom” look)
- More prone to pilling (loose fibers migrate to surface)
Best for: 5-9 gauge hand knitting, chunky sweaters, scarves and shawls where softness is paramount, brushed or felted products.

How to tell worsted and woolen apart
Visual and tactile tests:

Hold to the light: Worsted yarn is semi-translucent (smooth, light passes through evenly). Woolen is opaque (fibers scatter light).

Rub between fingers: Worsted feels cool and slick. Woolen feels warm and soft.

Untwist a 1cm section: Worsted has parallel, smooth fibers. Woolen has random, jumbled fibers.

Examine the cross-section: Worsted is dense and round. Woolen is loose and irregular.
If a sample doesn’t pass these tests, you may have a semi-worsted or semi-woolen yarn — which is fine, but should be labeled correctly.
When to choose each
Choose worsted for:
- Fine-gauge sweaters (12+ gauge) — smooth fabric, drapes well
- Suiting and coating woven fabric — fluid drape, no fuzz
- Fine scarves and shawls — elegant, smooth against skin
- Premium blend yarns (cashmere/silk, cashmere/wool) — adds strength
- Anywhere pill resistance is critical — luxury customers notice
Choose woolen for:
- Chunky hand-knit sweaters (5-9 gauge) — soft, lofty, traditional look
- Brushed scarves and stoles — fuzzy halo is desirable
- Felted products — woolen structure felts more easily
- Mid-market products — woolen is cheaper (no combing)
- Casual knitwear — the “cozy” aesthetic
Anti-pilling treatments
Pilling is the #1 quality complaint about cashmere knitwear. It happens when short fiber ends work their way to the surface and tangle.
Two main strategies:
- Use longer fibers (Hauteur > 36mm) — worsted spinning naturally resists pilling
- Apply anti-pilling treatment — enzyme wash that removes short surface fibers
Our anti-pilling treatment uses a mild cellulase enzyme that digests protruding fiber ends without damaging the yarn core. The result is a 60-70% reduction in pilling after 50 wear cycles, with no hand-feel change.
Cost: Anti-pilling adds $0.30-0.50 per kg of yarn. For luxury products where customers expect longevity, it’s well worth it.
Blending with wool or silk
100% cashmere is the most expensive option. For mid-market products, blending extends fiber and reduces cost without dramatic hand-feel change:
- 90/10 cashmere/wool: 90% of the hand feel at 80% of the cost. Best for mid-market knitwear.
- 70/30 cashmere/wool: Cheaper, but the wool becomes noticeable.
- 85/15 cashmere/silk: Adds drape and slight sheen. Best for scarves and lightweight knits.
- 50/50 cashmere/wool: Cheap, but loses most of the cashmere feel. Use for entry-level products only.
For blends, worsted spinning is essential — woolen spinning shows the difference between cashmere and wool fibers too clearly.
