Most "cashmere factories" you find on Alibaba are trading companies with no production capacity. Even legitimate factories vary widely in quality systems. Here are 8 verifiable checks you can run from your desk before paying a deposit. We've included what we measure up to on each — so you have a benchmark.
✓ 1. Business License & 14+ Years of Operation
Request a copy of the Chinese business license (营业执照). Check the "established date" — anything less than 10 years is a red flag. Cross-reference the company name against Qichacha (企查查), China's free corporate registry.
Our score: Established 2002 (23+ years). Legal name: Ordos Dongxiao Cashmere Co., Ltd. Qichacha ID verifiable.
✓ 2. Export License & Customs Records
A real exporter has a Chinese customs declaration registration (海关进出口收发货人备案). Ask for the registration number. Better: ask for the company's HS code export volumes from the past 3 years — Chinese customs data is partially public via General Administration of Customs.
Our score: Registered exporter since 2008. HS code 6110/6117 (cashmere knitwear) export volume verified.
✓ 3. Certifications (OEKO-TEX, ISO 9001, BSCI, GOTS)
Request PDF copies of certificates — not photos. Verify the certificate number on the issuing body's website (e.g. OEKO-TEX, BSCI). Expired certificates are worthless — check the validity dates.

✓ 4. Physical Factory Video Tour (30+ minutes, unedited)
Request a live video tour via WeChat or WhatsApp. Verify: (a) knitting machines (German STOLL / Japanese Shima Seiki are industry standard); (b) raw material warehouse with bales of cashmere fiber; (c) finished goods warehouse; (d) workshop floor with actual workers. 5-minute edited videos are useless. 30+ minute unedited live tours are the gold standard.

Ask for 3-5 B2B client references. The supplier should give you direct contact emails, not just company names. Real references respond within 24-48 hours. Ask each reference: (a) what was the order size; (b) what was the defect rate; (c) was lead time met; (d) would you reorder?

✓ 7. Sample Round — Not Just a Catalog
A real factory has yarn inventory, knitting capacity, and washing/finishing lines. A catalog-only supplier sources from another factory. Test: order 2-3 hand-loom samples at USD 50-150 each. Real factories respond in 7-15 days. Catalog-only suppliers take 30+ days (because they're sub-contracting).

✓ 8. Third-Party Inspection Access (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek)
A trustworthy factory WELCOMES third-party inspection at the pre-shipment stage. They cover inspector's local travel, accommodation, and reasonable on-site time. If a factory tries to charge you for "inspection fees" or refuses third-party inspection entirely, walk away.

Bonus: How to Spot a Trading Company Masquerading as a Factory
Trading companies in Inner Mongolia often claim "factory direct" but operate from a Shanghai office. Red flags: (a) no live video tour, only edited clips; (b) "we work with several partner factories" — this is a trading company, not a factory; (c) all communication via WeChat, no landline or fixed office address; (d) refuses to sign a quality guarantee clause in the PI.
