Test 1: OFDA micron scan (the gold standard)
The single most important cashmere test. OFDA 2000 is a laser-scanning instrument that measures fiber diameter on 2,000+ fibers per sample, producing a mean and standard deviation.
What to look for:
- Premium white cashmere: 14.5-15.5μm mean, σ < 1.0μm
- Standard white: 15.0-16.0μm mean, σ < 1.2μm
- Anything > 16.5μm marketed as “premium” is suspect
Cost: $50-150 per sample. Most universities with textile engineering programs offer OFDA testing for under $100.
Red flag: A supplier who provides only “typical values” rather than your-batch-specific OFDA data.
Test 2: Hand-combing visual inspection
Before any lab work, look at the raw combings. Real Albus goat fiber is:
- Long (36-42mm for premium, 32-38mm for standard)
- Parallel-aligned (herders comb in one direction)
- Slightly bluish-tinted (true white Mongolian has a natural cast, not pure bright white)
- Has a soft hand feel (low micron + good crimp)
Pure bright white fiber has usually been bleached, which damages the cuticle. If you run your fingers through a sample and get a “squeaky” or “plastic” feel, it’s been chemically treated.
Test 3: Dehaired yield check
Take 1 kg of greasy cashmere and send it to a processing facility for dehairing. The yield (dehaired output weight / raw input weight) reveals a lot:
- 35-42% yield: high-quality Albus fiber, properly combed
- 25-35% yield: standard Mongolian, possibly mixed grades
- < 25% yield: very short fiber or excessive guard hair (low quality)
If a supplier claims 50% yield, they’re either chemically treating the fiber (which damages it) or blending with non-cashmere.
Test 4: Color consistency within bale
A real “white” cashmere bale should have subtle but visible color variation within it — different goats, different body parts, slightly different ages all contribute. Perfectly uniform bright-white fiber is a sign of bleaching.
Take 5-10 random pinches from different parts of a bale. If they look like they came from identical sources, the bale has likely been processed (blended, sorted, or bleached) to remove natural variation.
Test 5: Length distribution (Hauteur)
Use a comb sorter or send to a lab for Almeter testing. Length distribution reveals:
- Hauteur (H) > 36mm: premium, suitable for worsted spinning
- H 32-36mm: standard, suitable for woolen spinning
- H < 32mm: short fiber, only suitable for felted products or low-end blends
Short fiber shows up in finished yarn as pilling and weak spots — exactly what premium brands are trying to avoid.
Test 6: Guard hair content (visual microscope)
Under 40x magnification, count guard hair fibers vs cashmere fibers in a 1g sample. Real dehaired cashmere should have < 2% guard hair by count. Anything above 5% suggests incomplete dehairing.
You don’t need an expensive microscope — a $30 USB microscope with 40-100x magnification works fine. Count 100 fibers, classify each as cashmere (fine, crimped) or guard hair (thick, straight).
Test 7: Supplier facility audit
The ultimate test: visit the factory. In one day at a vertically integrated cashmere facility, you can verify:
- Herder contracts on file (real direct sourcing)
- Dehairing line in operation (not just a trading company)
- Bale tracking system (every bale tagged from herder to customer)
- OFDA equipment in-house (means they test, not just claim)
- Storage conditions (climate-controlled, no direct sunlight)
A reputable supplier will arrange a 2-day facility visit including Ordos and a herder village. If a supplier makes excuses about visiting, walk away.
Red flags that bypass any test
Even the best tests can be fooled if the supplier is determined. Watch for these behavioral red flags:
- Refuses to provide per-bale OFDA data (“We test but don’t share results”)
- Asks for 100% upfront payment before any samples
- Refuses factory visit or limits it to “office meetings” in Beijing
